What Real Alaskan Women Read

So I am really a slow reader.. But as I started the book, really as I even looked at the cover, questions were popping into my head left and right, really I am a sense of place person. And I realized that I often do not read books that it takes me so long to understand where they are at and how they feel because it is connected to place. So if I do not understand basics of the area, or it is so alien to me, well I struggle. Like what the hell is an ibex? or that k2 is so close to Everest, but Everest is taller and K2 is more technical. I must have asked Rich a million questions before I could even finish the introduction. Geez.
Knowing that I am this way, before I even opened the book I had to ask Rich the relation of the area to Iran and Iraq. We talked for a bit about the people that are in the area. I was curious how folks from other countries reflected on the US and if they were as curious about the types of people in the different states of the US or if they viewed us in a more worldly sense, such as all the US being "Americans." Rich reminded me also about the idea that many folks had access to satellite TV, American TV, so maybe they did have a sense of different states. But then again, maybe that is just my "American" mindedness to think in terms of the world revolves around the US.
The descriptions of the stark beauty, however, are universal. The only way of really knowing the descriptions of this is to be in it. So I guess I will have to go :)
Ahh, but it is so easy to be an armchair adventurer.
The writing style has quickly engrossed me, and my first attitude of "why do Americans think we need schools everywhere?" has quickly changed as Relin and Mortenson have brought me into an understanding of their sense of place. I will be anxious to read on, as I think they will give the perspective of the people in the area. This will help me understand the need.
Of course, Mortensen is a bad @#$. I wonder what made him so amazing, and then there was a particular paragraph that I was able to make a connection to. (The paragraph about his doggedness). These two sold me on the book. I will probably end up reading it very quickly now as I have identified with the main character. Did either of you make a connection with him? I am curious if this is just part of the author's style.
