I have read up to November. I thought for awhile that I would read a chapter with each month that I go through, but I became involved in the book. I also just realized that the chapters change as to who is telling the story (duhh!).
As I read I marked several pages that I wanted to share and talk about.
The first section that kind of sucked me into the book was the May chapter. I had read it right at about the time that we had returned from visiting the Foshees and had gone to their farmers mar…

I have really enjoyed reading Elizabeth Gilbert's book. I totally agree with Tina that it is like sitting down and having coffee with a friend. I have already read through the section on Italy and can't wait to start India. I just have one question for you ladies....what is the one word that describes you? Can you think I one...this thought has been on my mind lately and I an trying to figure out if I can find an answer and if I LIKE the answer that I come up with??? Also her initial thoughts on…

It is back to work. So what better thing to do than stall out on work and post to our Alaska Mama's book club. Actually my excuse is valid, as I make it a point to stay off the computer during holidays. I spend enough time already in front of the screen.
So I took the time to finish the book Eat, Love , Pray.
As I mentioned in my email, it was good enough to make me want to look for God. That is quite a feat.
I also marked out some of my favorite lines (there were many.) So when you come across…

I still have not been able to put the book down, with an exception. I am about half way through the book and it has caused me to think sooo much. But I have to be brave and honest (snicker) and admit that I picked up Twilight as an evening-let-down-my-hair book and let-my-brain-relax and I could not put it down. Talk about book-candy. There is not a whole bunch of substance to the book (really none) but it has capitalized my time for reading.
As embarrassed as I am to admit it!
At any rate, I th…

I am laughing about my post and laughing at myself from yesterday, as I read on further in the book. Enough said.

I am into the first part of the book, and find that I had to force myself to put it down. I love the writing quite a bit. The dry humor and the tone. She reminds me of the Holt Sarcasm. Opening the book is like having a good friend over for coffee.
There are already several sections in the book that I have totally identified with. The section that she describes being able to tentatively ask herself what she wants. She would grudgingly ask herself for small things like a pencil box, or leave a pa…

Okay after talking with most everybody it sounds like our next book is Eat, Love and Pray.
I am going to attempt to read 1-2 chapters at least every week. :)
I am excited for a new adventure.

Well I know we are in October and it took me all summer to read the first book, so I thought I would check in with everyones busy schedule to see if you wanted to tackle another book?
Camai had a suggestion for reading
Charlie Wilson's War.
Other suggestions. I know we also purchased…

Well I just finished the book, and had composed a wonderful posting, and of course just lost it.
So I will attempt to recompose without frustration.
I am glad that I took my time to read it, as it gave me time to think and ponder the story and events. I feel that I can spend more time thinking of other countries and cultures.
I think one of the things that I enjoyed so much about the book was how inspiring Mortenson's story is. He is trully an example of excellent character. Accept one aspect. H…

I am nearing the end of the book and my early feelings on Americans coming in and setting up schools has changed. I cannot at all make a comparison to Alaskan Villages and these villages. They are two completely different entities. But what I can reflect further on is the concept of the individual thinker, which is truly what Greg is, an independent thinker. The independent thinker is the survivor. More now than ever, when I think about educating someone, or becoming educated, what we mean to sa…

Well Tiff is done with the book, and she even has a new job. I am still reading. :( My work has started and I was hoping to finish before it did. I have been trying to slip in a chapter or so every now and then.
I am currently just finished Cherry Trees in the Sand. I had to pause and spend a bit of time on the web and google earth searching out the area that the Bromlo people were shifted to. I was hoping to see a picture of the cherry trees in the sand and the mud houses.…

I just finished the book yesterday at the community pool...it only took me about an hour to finish a chapter...between the boys' shouting, "...LOOK at ME while I am jumping off the diving board..."
I have been eating up this book...at night-in the tent-after the boys' are asleep and sometimes waking up in the middle of the night to pick it back up with a headlamp on, so not to wake anyone else up in the tent...awe...close quarters are fun!
I love that Greg Mortenson has no other motives other…

Well here we are in August and I am in little more half way through the book. I definitely think that it is something I could spend all day reading. The ease and fun nature of the writing helps greatly.
However there are a few questions lingering in my mind. Where are all of the teachers coming from for each school? Is it the numradher (sp) that is the teacher? Or someone else in the villages? Also, what happens after the kids go to school? What improvements come into the village?
It bothers me…

Well once again Tiff has out done me on the computer thing. Always reminding and modeling. Which also reminds me of Stacy always reminding and modeling. I will come back to this point in just a moment, but the reason for this post first.
Welcome Camai, our new member. I heard you were from Anchorage, so welcome. We are in the midst of Three Cups of Tea and our hope is that this will keep us connected as we diverge in the summer and winter.
But as I had mentioned our good friend Tiff leads the wa…

...oh boy...
i pulled the book out of my bag on my journey to las vegas...which is quite a surreal spot to be in when reading about a man doing amazing things...as i am getting ready to embark on a journey into gluttonous behavior, burning through money and drinking excessively...hmmm...probably could have done something more useful and helpful...or climbed K2.
i am a reader that enjoys adventure and have thoughts of doing something so incredibly inspirational that would be worthy of a book...b…

So I am really a slow reader.. But as I started the book, really as I even looked at the cover, questions were popping into my head left and right, really I am a sense of place person. And I realized that I often do not read books that it takes me so long to understand where they are at and how they feel because it is connected to place. So if I do not understand basics of the area, or it is so alien to me, well I struggle. Like what the hell is an ibex? or that k2 is so close to Everest, but Ev…

Okay next steps I am thinking are when we should finish the book, how often to post about chapters or not post till books is finished. I mainly think, ing about spoilers. Maybe we do not even want to have any structure.
I am adding a poll, testing out the feature. I think it should sit right above the blog.

Well this will be the first posting for the first Alaska Mama's Read Book Club. I know a lame title. I cannot think of anything more creative. (Do you like the tagline, it's as cheesy as the title.)
Our first read that we have is Three Cups of Tea. This will be a great place for us to make postings about where we are at in the reading, discuss chapters or link to websites to enrich the reading. I tried to create a text section on the right for the three or more of us to add links to Blogs. This…
